Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
