Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
