Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary addresses the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics and the perceived horrors of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to hosting an aerobics show on television. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This produces a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful mystery includes Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from writing about world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, plus additional extremely wealthy passengers. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and all passengers claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries through this nifty supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He portrays a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, several child abductions has made the youth frightened. After Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, as the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a mole inside the organization from five suspects – among them is his own wife. The two stars are masters of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of fact versus fiction unfolds. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
